The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has made a statement regarding the increase in social grants, stating that not only will the increases impact all the social grants but also, the new grant rates will come into effect as early as November 2025. By giving the poorest of the poor in the country, which are the millions that get the least support, financial aid, the government targets not only that the class of people hardest hit by the cost of living increases (food and fuel) can survive but also that they can cope with the problem, which has already been very challenging for them.
So the Grant Increases Announcement is Now Slated for November 2025
- SASSA’s latest circular suggests huge increases but very minor ones across the board for grants. While all the grants have been dramatically affected, these are the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Care Grant, and Care Dependency Grant which are all accounted for in the amounts to be changed.
- Under the new scheme, the government will pay R2,315 and R2,335 starting November 2025 for the under 75 years group and for the over 75 years group as Old Age Grant respectively. The Disability Grant will also be R2,315 as mentioned above.
- On the contrary, the Child Support Grant will be R545 and the new figure for Foster Care Grant will be R1,210. The Care Dependency Grant will also be R2,315 implying that the parents of disabled children will be allotted the same amount of help as the other major grants.
- SASSA has also announced that there will not be any new application process as the alteration will be reflected automatically in the beneficiaries’ bank deposit, SASSA card, and cash pay point amount.
SASSA Payment Schedule for November 2025
The payment distribution is going to take place during the whole month of November 2025 and in such a manner to facilitate the people coming for payments and also to prevent a large crowd from gathering to collect the cash. SASSA, once more, has cautioned the beneficiaries that they will not be penalized if they do not come to the cash counter on the very first day since the money is still in their accounts until they decide to collect it.Therefore, the SASSA payment schedule for November 2025 gives the following details:
Aging Grants: Wednesday, November 5, 2025, and later
- Payments for disabled individuals: Thursday, November 6, 2025 Children and other people’s grants: Friday, November 7, 2025
- Cash withdrawals through bank transfers and retailers, including Shoprite, Boxer, PnP, and Spar, will be subject to the above timeline. Holders of Postbank/SASSA Gold Cards can access their funds without any charges after the indicated date.
The government’s commitment to social safety net
The Department of Social Development has reported that the new rates are one of the measures comprising the government’s comprehensive program aimed at poverty eradication and the help of the poor. The new rates were in line with the 2025 National Budget which presented the social welfare sector as the only positive factor in the midst of the economic crisis and the government’s failure to win the public’s trust. Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu pointed out that the higher amounts were meant to “enable the families to preserve their dignity and stability even in hard times.” She also strongly advised the recipients to keep their contact and bank details up-to-date regularly to avoid any payment disruptions.
