South Africa Driver’s Licence Cards: Major Good News For New Applications

The application for a new or replaced driver’s license card in South Africa is not so bad now for motorists as the Department of Transport officially stated that the printing of license cards has been done completely clearing the historic backlog. This announcement followed months of interruptions that left hundreds of thousands of motorists who had applied for cards, waiting for them since there was a nationwide system failure.

Reasons For The Licence Card Printing Machine Breakdown

In February 2025, South Africa’s only and existing driver’s licence card printing machine broke down, and thus caused the delays. Because the whole country depended on just one machine to make licence cards for all nine provinces, the malfunction immediately came to a standstill for a short period of time only where the machine was only out of operation for several months while the repairs were being done, customers had to wait for a long time and unprinted cards kept piling up in huge droves.

Thousands Of Driver’s Licenses Issued By The Repair Maintenance

On May 8, 2025, the printing of cards started again after successfully fixing the machine. The Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) was involved in a very intense process of working all outstanding applications from then until the beginning of December 2025. More than 2.23 million driver’s licences were printed and sent out all over the country during this time. The people in charge confirmed that, by the beginning of January 2026, all the applications that were in the backlog had been dealt with.

Delays Affected Certain Provinces More Than Others

The situation was very critical with a backlog of more than 700,000 cards, around Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape the most affected areas with Gauteng alone accounting for over 250,000 cards stuck in the issuance process. The holders of driving licenses had no other option but to use temporary ones while their legal ones were being made.

Longer Working Hours Were A Solution To The Backlog

The DLCA issued the long and extra production shifts as one of the steps to eliminate the problem. These tactics enabled workers to simultaneously handle both the older applications and the new submissions. According to the Department of Transport, the plan was pivotal not just in bringing back the normal turnaround times, but also in making sure that the drivers got their cards in the quickest possible time.

Preparations For The Future

In light of the crisis, the Department of Transport also made it a point to put in place plans that would prevent the recurrence of similar disruptions in the future. The Government Printing Works and the Department of Transport signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a backup solution for licence card printing. The licensing card prototype has been approved and the data transfer security testing has been done successfully – that is just a part of the progress that has been made so far.

The Implication For The Drivers

The department has taken out the backlog and has put in place measures that would prevent a similar situation from happening again, thus driver’s licence applications will be more hassle-free and processing of them more reliable. The department has through their own ways assured the motorists that the present applications are being dealt with in the same usual time periods, thus bringing back the needed stability to the system.
