High-Income SASSA Recipients Face Suspension In November 2025 – See If You Are Affected

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has declared that the income verification process will result in the suspension of thousands of social grant recipients at the earliest opportunity, i.e., November 2025. SASSA is implementing strict measures to ensure that the financial support goes only to the poor who are the only breadwinners.

SASSA Is Going Through The Income Verification Of Beneficiaries With High-Incomes

SASSA’s social grants are meant for the poor and the most disadvantaged people. But, recent audits, and collaborations with SARS and banks have revealed that some people with incomes much higher than the grant limit still receive the grants. In light of this, SASSA has begun the full income verification review process that will allow the agency to stop payments to those whose incomes exceed the qualifying limits. The agency argues that this is part of its bigger plan to root out fraud, ensure accountability, and preserve the integrity of the social grant system.

Who Will Be Affected by the Suspension in the First Place?

SASSA beneficiaries from various grant categories could bear the brunt of the problem, ranging from old-age benefits, disability, child support, and the R370 SRD grant. The new investigation will focus on recipients who:

  • Have not reported their salaries or receive regular payments that exceed the means test limits.
  • Hold several bank accounts with higher incoming transactions than allowed based on SASSA’s grant eligibility criteria.
  • Receive other government grants or allowances that were not disclosed during the application.
  • Have dependents or partners whose combined income exceeds the qualifying limit for the household.

Income thresholds for the year 2025

Recipients of the most SASSA grants must have incomes below the following thresholds: R103,000 p.a. for individuals and R206,000 for couples for the Old Age and Disability Grants; R60,000 p.a. for single and R120,000 for married caregivers for the Child Support Grant; and for the SRD R370 Grant: the applicants’ monthly income must be R624 or less, and they should not receive any other financial support. If a person’s income exceeds these limits, he/she will lose the grant or it will be suspended in November 2025 at the latest.

Ways to Evade Suspension

SASSA recommends always to notify changes in the beneficiary’s income and banking details through official channels:

  • Visit SASSA’s official site www.sassa.gov.za, and click on “Update Personal Details.”
  • Call SASSA’s free number 0800 60 10 11, and they will help you through the verification process.
  • Forward your recent payslips, bank statements, or affidavits with your income proof to meet the income criteria.
  • Instead of being automatically suspended, beneficiaries receiving higher income but still needing help may ask for a temporary reassessment instead of being suspended automatically.
